A young Ukrainian man was killed on Sunday morning, February 23, after he was struck by a garbage truck in a Brooklyn intersection.
Officials did not release the man’s name, pending notification of his family in Ukraine, and only identified the man as a 25-year-old student from Ukraine who was studying in Morristown, NJ, to become a rabbi. The man was in Brooklyn for an engagement party when the accident occurred.
According to witnesses, the man was walking north on Kingston Avenue in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn around 9 AM when he stepped into the crosswalk to cross Carroll Street. Just as the man stepped into the crosswalk, the garbage truck, which belonged to the city Sanitation Department, was turning right from Kingston Avenue onto Carroll Street. The truck hit the man, who suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not charged the driver of the truck, who remained at the scene after the accident. Police are continuing to investigate the tragic death.
