Riding off-road recreational vehicles is considered by many people to be a fun way to spend a weekend afternoon.  Dirt bikes and ATVs are specially equipped to handle the most rugged terrain.  In the deeply wooded areas of the country, dirt bikes and ATVs are very popular, especially among today’s youth.  However, these vehicles can also be very dangerous if they are not driven with a reasonable amount of caution.  They are not intended for travel on public roads or highways.  Moreover, like other similar types of vehicles, such as motorcycles or bicycles, dirt bikes and ATVs offer very little protection in the event of an accident.  In fact, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, nearly 51,000 children ages 5 to 14 are hurt annually riding all-terrain vehicles, mopeds and minibikes.  That number also includes traffic accidents.

On Monday, January 23, 2015, 17-year-old Aaron Gunter was riding his dirt bike along Highway 62 in Oliver Springs, Tennessee.  He had no head lights or tail lights.  At that time, Sharon Morton, 67, was driving westbound in her 2008 Kia. She was suddenly blinded by a passing car going eastbound and was unable to see Gunter as he moved up alongside her.  Ms. Morton’s car then hit Gunter’s dirt bike.  He flew off of his bike and landed on the side of the road where he was found by emergency personnel several minutes later.  Sadly, young Aaron was pronounced dead at the scene.
