\"Boston,<\/a>Two 23 year-old electrical engineering USC students from China, Ying Wu and Minq Qu, were sitting in Qu\u2019s BMW off campus when they were shot by an unknown assailant in April of this year.<\/strong>\u00a0 The parents of the two students filed a wrongful death<\/a> lawsuit against the university in the Los Angeles Superior Court, seeking unspecified wrongful death damages<\/a>.<\/p>\n

USC, though deeply saddened by the event, denies any wrongdoing, and will move to have the case dismissed.\u00a0 USC claims that the shooting was a random act of violence that the university was not able to prevent, and that the act is not representative of the safety of USC or its surrounding neighborhoods.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In initial negotiations, USC offered the families financial assistance as a gesture of \u201ckindness and sympathy,\u201d but the family refused the offer and instead filed the wrongful death suit.\u00a0 The families\u2019 attorney stated that the parents rejected the offer because it required them to release the university of all liability.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the grounds for the suit is that USC \u201cactively solicits international students\u201d by exaggerating \u201cthe virtues of USC\u201d and stating that USC \u201cis ranked among the safest of U.S. universities and colleges\u201d with a proactive safety program.\u00a0\u00a0 Despite this representation, the families claim that USC did not patrol the area of the shooting and that the campus is, in fact, located in a high-crime area.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Following the shooting, and an unrelated robbery a week later, the LAPD announced that it would provide greater patrolling around the campus.\u00a0 USC also said that it would add more campus police to escort students at night, and would install more surveillance cameras around the campus.<\/p>\n
