Albuquerque, New Mexico Explodes In A Wave Of Protests After Shocking Police Killing.

The residents of Albuquerque, New Mexico have taken to the streets this past week after yet another brutal police killing, which happened to have been caught on camera and distributed. The video shocked the public conscience concerning the heavy-handed actions of the Albuquerque Police Department.

On March 16, 2014, three police officers of the Albuquerque Police Department approached 38 year-old James Boyd on the outskirts of town. Boyd had a long history of mental problems, and episodes of violence. Boyd had been living on the streets for some time, and was sleeping on the street in a “no trespassing” zone. The officers woke up Boyd, argued with him for a while, and then told him to come with them. After arguing, Boyd agreed to comply and began gathering his belongings into a shopping cart. At that moment, one of the police officers threw a stun grenade at Boyd’s feet. Boyd was visibly startled, and reached for what looked like a knife. The officers then opened fire on Boyd, and shot him several times. Boyd was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital.

One of the police officers was wearing a helmet camera that recorded the entire incident. The video was posted on the video-sharing website Youtube and quickly went viral. The video’s wide dissemination prompted the residents of Albuquerque to march out into the streets this past week. The protestors blocked traffic, and demanded that the APD Commissioner Gorden Eden resign and that wholesale changes be made to the running of the city’s police force.

Protestors say that their outrage is understandable considering the heavily militaristic approach of the city’s law enforcement officers. Since 2010, APD officers have been involved in 37 shootings, 23 of which resulted in the fatal shooting of another person by a police officer. These numbers are higher than those posted by the NYPD in New York City, a city 16 times larger than Albuquerque. The defensive statements of the city’s mayor and top police officials, that allegedly the police officers were acting in their own defense, have caused even more outrage. Several federal investigations by the FBI and the Justice Department are underway into the behavior and practices of the APD.

General Motors’ Recall is Proof ‘Frivolous Lawsuits’ Aren’t a Problem.

This article originally appeared as a Letter to the Editor in the The Dallas Morning News on March 17, 2014:

The recent revelation that the General Motors Co. failed to fix, or warn the public about, a known ignition switch defect in some of its cars for a decade is the kind of thing that drives personal-injury lawyers apoplectic.

According to GM itself, this defect has been linked to 31 accidents and 12 deaths. An independent watchdog group, however, has found that 303 people have died after the airbags in two of the models that GM has now finally recalled failed to deploy.

The next time that you hear someone talking about “frivolous lawsuits” or limiting the amount of damages that a jury can award, you might want to ask yourself a few questions.

Do you think that GM performed any sort of cost-benefit analysis in determining how quickly to protect the public by recalling its dangerous vehicles? Do you think that GM’s decade-long delay in issuing a recall had anything to do with the expenses that would be incurred by acting quickly, compared with the amounts of the jury awards likely to be awarded if they waited?

Another Sign of a Frightening Trend Toward Corporate Sway.

This article originally appeared as a Letter to the Editor in the Boston Globe on March 16, 2014:

Last Sunday’s front-page article “Cancer science leans more on industry funds” brings to light yet another disturbing example of increasing corporate influence and power in America. This trend is particularly troubling with respect to cancer research, where the only goal should be to reduce human suffering.

That the influence of corporate funding at institutions doing cancer research is on the rise, while public funding is ebbing, does not bode well for the public at large. Substantial corporate funding, and thus corporate influence, increases the likelihood that hospital research will be focused not solely on the public good, but rather on increasing corporate profits. While the public interest is most strongly promoted by general scientific research, corporate interests often involve the financial success of particular products, which are manufactured by particular corporations.

This is another frightening instance of a growing trend in our country. It recalls how the Supreme Court, overruling decades of precedent, allowed unlimited corporate spending in political campaigns. Now large corporate contributions are a commonplace in American politics. The right political candidates, for corporate interests, thereby stand a greater chance of being elected to office because money translates into votes.

One day we may find that maximizing corporate profits is most, if not all, of what scientific research is all about. Shame on us if we allow that to happen.
