Three Deaths In Virginia Hot Air Balloon Accident.

Searchers have found the body of the third and final victim of the hot air balloon crash that took the lives of three people this past Friday, May 9, 2014 in Virginia.

Thirteen hot air balloons took off from a balloon festival in Richmond, Virginia this past Friday, May 9. One of the balloons was piloted by 65 year-old Army Lt. Col. Daniel Kirk, with 24 year-old Natalie Lewis and 44 year-old Ginny Doyle as passengers. Lewis is an operations manager and Doyle is an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team of the University of Richmond.

The hot air balloon party ran into trouble when the balloon accidentally came into contact with a live electrical wire near its landing area in rural Caroline County, Virginia. The basket of the balloon quickly caught fire and Lewis and Doyle jumped out while high above ground. Over 100 rescuers from the Virginia State Police and the National Transportation Safety Board searched for the victims for two days, until the body of the last victim was recovered. Law enforcement officials announced that they are now switching their efforts to investigation and collection of evidence.

This latest accident may renew the battle over whether hot air balloon operators should be subject to mandatory evaluation of their abilities at operating a hot air balloon.

Seven Crew Members Arrested In Wake Of South Korean Ferry Disaster.

This past Wednesday, April 16, 2014, a ferry called Sewol was carrying over three hundred passengers and crew to a resort island in the Yellow Sea. An unfortunate series of decisions contributed to the ferry sinking with a high death toll. South Korean officials have now arrested seven members of the crew, including the ferry captain.

In a scene eerily reminiscent of a recent ferry disaster in Italy, a ferry captain of the South Korean ferry, Sewol, was paraded by police in front of television cameras. The captain is accused of negligence, failing to remain with the ship, and multiple other violations of maritime law.

The tragic boating accident began on Wednesday in the Yellow Sea not far from the South Korean coast. A massive ferry boat was carrying hundreds of people, cars and other heavy equipment to a resort island. The vast majority of the passengers were high school students from a single high school near Seoul. The students were on a field trip to the resort island. According to South Korean officials, the boating was going too fast when the navigators attempted a sharp turn, which caused the boat to list. As the boat began to flip, and the crew sent out frantic emergency calls, the captain of the ferry made the decision to delay lowering the life boats and sending the passengers into the water. The captain and most of the crew soon left the ship, leaving hundreds of passengers, mostly children, trapped inside the listing vessel.

The South Korean government has confirmed that 87 people have died, while 215 others remain missing. Given the amount of time that the boat has been underwater, it is becoming less and less likely that any more survivors will be pulled out of the boat. The South Korean Prime Minster has publicly lashed out at the ferry captain and the rest of the crew, calling their actions “akin to murder.” The captain has defended his actions by arguing that the cold water and strong local currents made it inadvisable to send the passengers into the water as the ship listed. The captain and his assistance are expected to stand trial for a variety of serious criminal charges.

The negligent actions of a single person can sometimes result in dozens of people suffering personal injuries and even wrongful death. California Bus-Truck Crash Results In Ten Deaths.

A collision between a Fed-Ex tractor trailer and a charter bus this past Thursday, April 10, 2014 resulted in the deaths of ten people, most of them high achieving high school students on their way to a tour of the Humboldt State University campus for a tour and presentation of college life.

Witnesses described the scene as a Fed-Ex tractor trailer was traveling southbound on Interstate 5 approximately 90 miles north of Sacramento, California. Suddenly, the tractor-trailer began to shift into the fast lane and swerved out of control as the driver attempted the maneuver. The truck crossed the highway median and rammed head-on into an oncoming charter bus filled with high achieving students coming from low income or first generation families. The witnesses both inside and outside of the bus described the flames that immediately engulfed both motor vehicles. Students knocked out windows in the bus and jumped out.

Emergency responders quickly brought the flames under control and rushed more than 30 individuals, mostly students, to nearby emergency rooms for medical treatment of personal injuries ranging from light bruising to smoke inhalation to burns. Officials confirmed that ten individuals died in the trucking accident, including the drivers of both vehicles, three chaperones for the students, and five students. The deaths resulted from a mixture of blunt force trauma and burn injuries.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into this tragic truck-bus accident. The NTSB officials have already partially refuted at least one statement from a witness that the Fed Ex truck was on fire before striking the bus. The investigators stated that they found no evidence to support this statement. The investigation is expected to take some time as both drivers were killed and the pool of people who saw first-hand what happened is quite limited.
