Icy Roads Cause Fatal Accident in Montague, Massachusetts.

Icy road conditions caused a fatal car accident in Montague, Massachusetts on January 11, 2014.

The head-on motor vehicle crash occurred at approximately 1:20 AM at the corner of Deerfield and Cheapside Streets in Montague.  The accident killed Greg Ellis, a 31-year-old man from the Turner Falls area.

According to reports, Ellis lost control of his car after he ran into a snowbank while turning left onto Cheapside Street from Deerfield Street.  Ellis’s vehicle then struck a van in the intersection, causing him to sustain serious injuries.  An ambulance responded to the scene of the accident and rushed him to the Baystate Franklin Medical Center emergency room where he died shortly thereafter.

Ellis was a single father and is survived by his young son, Anthony.  Ellis’s close friend, Tim Gochinski, set up an online fund where people can make donations to help the Ellis’s son.  The Website raised more than $5000 in just its first day online.

The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office is currently investigating the crash.  Public safety officials reported 10 car accidents over just an eight hour period encompassing the time of Ellis’s crash. Officials say the high rate of accidents was likely due to the poor weather conditions on that morning alone after the snow melted and froze over, causing the roads to become unsafe.

Wrongful Death Suit Attempting To Hold Tailgaters Responsible.

A wrongful death suit filed by the parents of 20-year-old Martin Gasque has named several groups, including tailgaters, responsible for his death. He was killed in 2010 in a fight that occurred after a football game at the University of South Carolina.

According to witnesses, Gasque and a fan of the opposing team exchanged heated words while leaving the big game. They both exited the trucks they were traveling in and a fight ensued. Witnesses say Simms punched Gasque in the face, knocking him to the ground and under the wheel of Gasque’s friend’s pickup truck. The friend, Adam Paxton, veered off the road without checking for Gasque’s whereabouts, crushing his chest and head with his front tire.

In addition to naming Simms and Paxton in the wrongful death suit, the parents of the deceased are suing a young man who invited Simms to a tailgating party where alcohol was served, the owners of the Shop Road property where the alcohol was served and a former USC football player who had leased the tailgating space where the tailgating party was held on that specific day. They theory is similar to that which holds bars accountable for patrons who overdrink and do something reckless. This is the first case in South Carolina that will attempt to hold tailgaters responsible for the alcohol they provide and the consequences of binge drinking before and during games.

Florida Billionaire Crashes Helicopter In The Bahamas, Killing Attorney Passenger.

A Florida billionaire is being sued after he crashed a helicopter he was not licensed to operate in the Bahamas, killing a prominent tax attorney.

The pilot of the helicopter that went down during a landing attempt at an exclusive golf club in the Bahamas is a billionaire who has made his earnings selling real estate. Although Jeffrey Soffer was licensed to fly fixed-wing aircraft at the time of the crash, he was not licensed to operate helicopters. Despite the fact that there was an experienced helicopter pilot on board at the time of the fatal crash, the billionaire had taken the reigns in order to show off his nearby house and yacht. Soffer flew the helicopter too close to the ground, however, and when they experienced wind turbulence, he lost control of the air craft.

The pilot and four others survived the crash.

The tax attorney’s widow has filed a wrongful death suit against Soffer in the amount of $100 million.
